What is DNSSEC?

The Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) are a suite of IETF specifications for securing certain kinds of information provided by the Domain Name System (DNS) as used on Internet Protocol (IP) networks. It is a set of extensions to DNS which provide to DNS clients (resolvers):

  • Origin authentication of DNS data
  • Data integrity (but not availability or confidentiality)
  • Authenticated denial of existence

Introduction

myDNSSEC is a project of .my Domain Registry.

As part of our exploration of myDNSSEC project, we have set up a closed environment for .my public testbed, an authoritative server with a signed zone pointed to IANA dnssec test root hint server, and a recursive resolver containing its trusted key. This test bed contains the following test zones:

  • .my
  • .net.my

The principal objective for this test bed is to allow its participants to experiment and familiarize with DNSSEC technology, and to analyze the operational and technical issues to facilitate deployment of DNSSEC in .my domain name in the future.

We had a closed test-bed that was open between 31st March, 2009 and 31st Oct, 2009. The closed test-bed was primarily targeted at .my DOMAIN REGISTRY Resellers, academician, IBTF members (banks) and APTLD members.

We have now opened our .my DNSSEC Public Trial which is between 29th December, 2009 to 16th May, 2010. This Public Trial is to allow the general public that would like to test how DNSSEC works and to test it out both at the .my Web Application to apply a domain name with DNSSEC to the process of which they sign their zone file. Anyone can join this Public Trial. The Public Trial is FREE of charge!

You may join the Public Trial by applying for a domain name at the Public Trial website (it's a replica of the Production website) at http://testbed.dnssec.my.

If you wish to know more about myDNSSEC project, we recommend that you visit our myDNSSEC project website here.

Objectives

  1. Creating a platform that prepares for DNSSEC deployment in Malaysia and anticipating DNSSEC potential deployment issues on DNS authoritative and cache servers;
  2. Gauging the acceptance and adoption of the DNSSEC technology by potential users; and
  3. Getting potential stakeholders such as domain hosting providers to sign their zones (authoritative servers) and preparing ISPs for eventual enablement of DNSSEC at their cache servers.
